ASIA: The Mogok region in Myanmar (formerly Burma) is historically renowned for producing high-quality rubies, commonly referred to as "pigeon's blood" rubies due to their deep red hue. While output has declined, it remains a significant source. Rubies are also found in Sri Lanka, known for lighter, raspberry-red stones, and Thailand, a hub for cutting and treatment.

AFRICA: Mozambique has emerged as a major ruby producer, particularly after the discovery of the Montepuez deposit, which often yields gems that rival any in the world. Madagascar also offers high-quality, coveted rubies.

MISC: In smaller quantities, rubies are mined in Afghanistan and Tanzania, as well as in less prominent areas of Asia and Africa. Historically, Thailand and Cambodia played leading roles in ruby production, though output has fluctuated.

Rubies and sapphires are both members of the corundum mineral family, with all colour variations resulting from the presence of trace elements. Sapphires typically include iron and titanium, while rubies contain chromium, which gives them their distinctive red hue.

Rubies are primarily composed of aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), with their red colour coming from trace amounts of chromium.

Rubies, like sapphires, rank a 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, making them very durable gemstones. This means they are highly resistant to scratching and are well-suited for everyday wear in jewellery, such as rings and bracelets. Only diamonds are harder, with a score of 10 on the Mohs scale.
