WORKSHOP | Ring Gallery Styles Explained

The gallery of a ring refers to the area located between the primary gemstones and the band (shank), which is visible from the side profile. This space is where decorative elements, such as filigree or accent stones, can be incorporated, allowing for customization and more intricate designs. The gallery also contains the basket and stems that connect the prongs to the primary gemstone, making it an essential part of the ring's overall aesthetic.

Basket

This type of gallery features prongs (or claws) reinforced with a horizontal bar that secures the gemstone in place, creating a 'basket' effect around the gemstone.

Fancy Basket

Similar to the standard basket gallery with prongs and a horizontal bar, this basket has undergone additional craftsmanship to create a unique and stylish design gallery setting.

Open

An 'Open' gallery utilises prongs but doesn't have a horizontal bar, as a 'Basket' gallery would. In this gallery, the gemstone is open, allowing an unobstructed view of its sides and pavilion.

Lotus

An intricate gallery, often leaf-like in design, similar to a lotus flower, which is frequently used to symbolise rebirth, beauty, and new beginnings.

Closed

The area around the primary gemstone doesn't have any gaps or openings. It's a solid, continuous band of metal that provides a more secure and sturdy setting, as well as a sleek and modern look.

Bar

Unlike a basket gallery, a standalone gallery bar has prongs that extend directly from the shank or the gallery bar itself. Floating Heads tend to use Bars to provide extra support for the gemstone. The bars can be plain or set with smaller stones, creating a "hidden halo" effect.
