Hues of Morganite

The desirability and rarity of morganite are largely influenced by its colour. Pink hues are generally more sought after than peach or salmon shades. More intense, saturated pinks are rarer and therefore more valuable than lighter or less vibrant options. While peach and salmon tones may attract some collectors, they are typically less common in the current market.

A standout choice for engagement rings. Its affordability compared to pink diamonds only adds to its appeal, making it a top choice for those seeking both beauty and value.

Pink

Pink is the most sought-after colour for morganite gemstones, showcasing shades from soft pastels to vibrant tones. This lovely hue represents romance, innocence, and love, making it a popular choice for engagement rings and fine jewellery.

Peach

Peach morganite is highly sought after, especially when untreated. However, pink and rose shades are generally more popular and valuable. Some collectors hold untreated peach morganite in higher regard than heat-treated pink stones.

Salmon

Salmon morganite is often seen as less desirable than pink or rose-coloured morganite, especially for engagement rings and jewellery. While it has its charm, the market usually prefers brighter pink and rose hues.

Violet

Some morganite gemstones can show a violet or bluish tint, especially from different angles, due to pleochroism. They tend to be less expensive than high-saturation pink varieties but remain a beautiful and unique choice.

Morganite belongs to the beryl mineral family. Other well-known members of the beryl family include emerald, aquamarine, heliodor, and goshenite. Morganite is specifically known for its pink to orange-pink hues, which are caused by trace amounts of manganese within the beryl structure.

Where in the World?

Africa: The original morganite discovery was in Madagascar, and it's still known for producing high-quality gemstones to this day. Mozambique, specifically the Alto Ligonha district, and Namibia have recently become significant regions for Morganite mining.

Asia: The Nuristan Province in Afghanistan is known to produce morganite.

North America: Morganite has been found in Maine (Buckfield) and California.

South America: Minas Gerais is a significant source of morganite, with deposits often found in pegmatites.

Composition

Morganite is a pink variety of the mineral beryl. Its chemical formula is Be₃Al₂(SiO₃)₆, indicating that it is a beryllium aluminium silicate. Although the basic structure is that of beryl, the presence of manganese in small quantities contributes to its distinctive pink colour.

Durability

Morganite is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, making it a durable gemstone for jewellery, provided it is treated with care to protect it against scratching and hard knocks.
