Learn more about what makes Sapphire Gemstones so desirable

WORKSHOP | Sapphire Gemstones

Sapphires are a highly valued and popular gemstone known for their vibrant colours, durability, and rich history. Primarily recognised for their blue hue, sapphires also occur in a wide range of other colours like pink, yellow, green, and even colourless. Their popularity stems from their beauty, symbolism, and the fact that they are one of the hardest naturally occurring minerals, making them ideal for jewellery.

Sapphires have been treasured for centuries and across various cultures, with ancient civilisations associating them with protection, wisdom, and even healing properties. Sapphires have also been favoured by royalty and the powerful throughout history, further enhancing their prestige and allure.

THE EBJ PERSPECTIVE

Sapphire is a gemstone we greatly admire for its exceptional beauty, durability, and unique variety of colours. While classic deep blues are timeless, we particularly prefer the captivating teal, rich purple, and intriguing colour-change sapphires that add a distinctive and rare element to any piece. With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, sapphires are incredibly durable, making them ideal for everyday wear and heirloom-quality jewellery. Their striking colours, brilliance, and strength make sapphires an outstanding choice for both traditional and contemporary bespoke designs.

THE BLUE HUES OF SAPPHIRES

Morganite showcases a stunning spectrum of pastel shades, from pink to orange-pink, with the most prevalent hues being pink, rose, peach, and salmon. The vibrant colours result from trace amounts of manganese, and it’s no surprise that the stronger pink varieties are both rarer and more valuable. Additionally, some stones beautifully display a violet or bluish tint, further enhancing their allure.

Pastel Blue

This colour is characterised by low saturation and light tones. Pastel blue sapphires are typically found in Sri Lanka, Burma, Kashmir, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Montana (USA).

BLUE CORNFLOWER

A highly sought-after variety of sapphire, known for its vivid, medium to medium-light blue colour that resembles the hue of its namesake (cornflower). This specific shade of blue is prized for its intensity. It is considered one of the most desirable colours for sapphires.

VELVET BLUE

A highly prized variety of blue sapphire, known for its unique velvety appearance and rich, intense blue colour, is often compared to cobalt or a "sleepy" blue. This unique visual effect is caused by minute inclusions that scatter light, creating a soft and diffused look.

ROYAL BLUE

A deep, vivid blue colour, often with hints of violet or purple. They are prized for their rich, intense colour and clarity, and are usually found in Sri Lanka, Kashmir, and Madagascar.

TWILIGHT BLUE

These dark blue sapphires are a popular variety recognised for their rich, deep blue colour. Collectors and jewellery enthusiasts highly seek after them due to their intense hue and traditional association with the classic sapphire appearance.

Teal, Green & Yellow Sapphires

TEAL

A lesser-known gemstone, blending deep ocean blue and vivacious green, makes it a stunning and rare gemstone, perfect for a unique engagement ring, earrings, or necklace.

Montana Teal

A unique variety of sapphire found in Montana, USA, known for its captivating blend of blue and green hues, often with hints of yellow or grey.

Mint Green

A type of green sapphire known for its light, refreshing green hue, often with hints of blue or yellow, resembling the colour of mint leaves. They are a rarer variety of sapphire, valued for their unique colour and durability, which is in part due to the presence of iron within the sapphire's crystal structure.

Vivid Green

They are a rare and captivating variety of sapphire.  They get their green colour from the presence of iron. Their colour can range from light mint to deep forest green, offering a diverse range of hues.

It has a pale yellow hue, often resembling a lemon. Light yellow sapphires are known for their durability and brilliance. They can be found in various locations, including Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Australia.

Canary Yellow

Known for its vibrant, pure yellow colour, similar to a canary bird. Highly valued for their intense, consistent colour, they are often considered the most desirable shade of yellow sapphire as they exhibit a bright, pure yellow hue, with medium to high saturation, and without any brownish or greenish tints.

Orange to Pale Pink Sapphires

Mekong Whisky

A Yellow to orange sapphire with rich, deep orange to brown tones, named for their colour resemblance to a popular Thai whiskey from the Mekong region. They are particularly prized in the Thai market and are often found in Chanthaburi, Thailand.

Also known as reddish-orange sapphires, they are prized for their vibrant and unique colour. These sapphires exhibit a colour that blends red and yellow hues, resulting in shades ranging from light pastel oranges to vivid orangish-reds.

PADPARADSCHA

Padparadscha sapphires are a rare and highly coveted variety of sapphire known for their unique pinkish-orange colour, often likened to the colour of a sunset or a lotus flower. Their specific colour sets them apart and makes them particularly rare and valuable.

PEACH

Known for their unique peach-like colour, which ranges from pale pinkish-orange to orangish-red. They are a type of fancy sapphire, prized for their warm, pastel hues and are considered rare and sought-after.

Pale Pink

Ranging from delicate pastel shades to slightly more intense hues. These sapphires owe their pink colour to trace amounts of chromium within the crystal structure. Pink is one of the most popular "fancy" colours, and pale pink sapphires are particularly sought after for their delicate, feminine appearance.

Pink & Purple Sapphires

Pink

Known for their pink colour and prized for their beauty and durability. Pink sapphires come in various shades, from pale pink to intense magenta, and are popular choices for jewellery, especially engagement rings.

Hot Pink

If unheated, hot pink sapphires can demand a very high price. Heating usually enhances the colour of sapphires. The intense hot pink colour is scarce in natural, unheated sapphires.

Fuchsia Pink

A vibrant, dark pink variety of sapphire, often described as a deep, saturated reddish-purple. They are considered a more intense and darker shade of pink. They can appear reddish or purplish depending on the lighting and surrounding colours. These sapphires are highly sought after.

Deep Purple

A rich, intense purple colour, ranging from deep violet to plum hues. They can exhibit colour-changing properties, appearing violet under daylight or fluorescent light and purple or blue under incandescent light.

Lilac

Primarily found in Sri Lanka and Madagascar, but less frequently in Tanzania, Kenya, and Myanmar. The mixes of purple-blue and pink are found in tone ranges from light pastels to richer and saturated shades. These are almost always untreated.
